Downtown Wenatchee Safety Meeting Recap: Keeping Our City Safe Together!

Recently, the Wenatchee Downtown Association hosted a safety meeting that highlighted some key issues and new initiatives designed to enhance security in our vibrant city center. The event kicked off with an introduction by Chief Reinfeld, who reminded everyone of the importance of open communication between law enforcement and the community when it comes to safety.

Meet the Team: Our Safety Experts

Leading the discussion, Officer Tito Mercado, who has seen firsthand how downtown parking has evolved, shared insights on how parking enforcement has changed over the years. With a wealth of experience, Detective Hewitt took the stage next to talk about the police department’s ongoing safety efforts and the impact of resource challenges. Having served for over a decade, Hewitt understands the complexities of policing with limited resources.

Law Enforcement & Patrols: More Coverage Needed

While there are regular patrols, Chief Reinfeld explained that there aren’t officers dedicated solely to downtown Wenatchee, primarily due to staffing shortages. However, patrols do happen—just not as frequently as desired. Reinfeld emphasized that despite this, they’re doing everything possible to cover the area.

Crime-Fighting Tech: Flock Cameras Are Coming!

Exciting news for crime prevention! The city is rolling out Flock Cameras, a tool that will assist law enforcement in identifying suspect vehicles. These aren’t Big Brother-style surveillance cameras, but rather a strategic way to track down cars linked to criminal activity. They’ve already been a game-changer, helping solve thefts at local businesses like Ulta.

Parking & Lighting: Brightening Downtown's Future

Downtown parking has improved, but some employees are still bending the rules, leading to violations. More importantly, better lighting is on the way! As winter approaches and the days get shorter, brighter streets mean safer streets. A study is in the works to add more lighting along Columbia Street to make those chilly, dark walks feel safer for everyone.

Homelessness & Anti-Camping Ordinance

The city is updating its anti-camping ordinance to include more areas, like Locomotive Park, in a bid to address homelessness more effectively. Taking the lead in this effort is Josh Mathena, the new Homeless Resource Administrator, who is working on providing resources such as shelters to those in need.

Crime Reporting: Every Call Counts!

One crucial message from the meeting was this: if you see something, say something—even for minor crimes. Whether it’s a vehicle break-in or suspicious activity, reporting all incidents allows law enforcement to follow up and address patterns of criminal behavior. When calling 911 or Rivercom, make sure to provide every detail requested and always say “yes” when asked if you'd like to "be a victim" to ensure the case is documented properly. For business owners dealing with trespassing issues, a Trespassing Form is available to streamline the process.

Community Involvement: We’re All in This Together

Chief Reinfeld underscored that community involvement is key to making downtown Wenatchee safer. Business owners and residents were reminded to keep properties clean and well-lit to deter crime. Working together, we can all help maintain a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.

Crime Trends: Car Prowling & Firearm Safety

Unfortunately, car prowling remains the top crime in downtown Wenatchee. Officers stressed the importance of locking your vehicle and keeping valuables out of sight—or better yet, out of the car altogether. And for those with firearms, make sure they’re never left inside your vehicle, as stolen guns can contribute to more serious crimes.

A Safer Future for Downtown Wenatchee

The Downtown Wenatchee safety meeting was a reminder of the power of community and the importance of staying informed. Whether it's reporting crimes, keeping our streets bright, or simply locking our cars, every small effort helps make our city safer. Let's continue working together to ensure downtown Wenatchee remains a thriving and secure place for all!
